Tips for Prolonging the Battery Life of Your E-bike

The battery is one of the core components of an e-bike. It provides you with power and assist you in cycling. For a longer-lasting ride, it is essential to use the battery properly. Here are some tips to help prolong the life of your battery.

Don’t drain the battery completely

It is not recommended to drain the battery completely, as this can damage the circuitry,  increasingly impair its longevity and decrease its overall capacity.

Charge the battery regularly

Regular charging can help prolong the battery life. It’s better to keep the battery above 50% of the capacity remaining.

Unplug the battery once it’s fully charged

A fully-charged battery will fall into a trickle charge if it is left on the charger for a long time, which can deteriorate the rechargeable battery and shorten its lifespan. Therefore, it is significant to unplug the battery as soon as it has reached 100% charge.

Store it partially charged

Batteries degrade over time even when not in use. According to the battery-testing firm - Cadex Electronics, a fully charged lithium-ion battery will lose about 20% of its capacity after a year of typical storage. To avoid draining the battery, store it partially charged and check the battery level regularly.

Use the Right Type of Charger

Using chargers intended for other types of batteries might cause a decline in battery performance or even damage to your battery. But charging your e-bike battery with the right type of charger can protect the battery and prolong its lifespan.

Protect it from extreme temperatures

High temperatures can trigger chemical reactions in the battery, which may lead to the destruction of the battery and even cause fires and explosions. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures can also cause a decline in battery performance and safety. The internal resistance of the battery increases as the temperature drops, indicating that more effort is required to fully charge the battery. In cold temperatures, battery capacity gets lower and the battery drains faster.

Keep the battery dry

Moisture can corrode the internal components of the battery and cause leakage, overheating or rupture. Thus, it is vital to protect your battery from moisture.

Safe transport

Remove the battery from the bike frame while in transport and protect it with a waterproof cover.
